The US and Iran maintained a cordial and positive relationship prior to 1953. We illegally committed a coup d’etat and diposed their Democratic government in order to install a brutal dictator, Shah, because of our and BP’s oil interests when Iran threatened to nationalize their oil production. BP was allegedly cheating them out of their royalties and refusing to open their books to prove they werent.
Shah was brutal to the Iranian people including widespread torture, killings, and other human rights abuses.
Decades later, after finally overthrowing Shah in a revolution, the embassy takeover and hostage situation was a demand for Shah to be returned to face trial for the brutalities committed by him on the Iranian people. Shah had fled Iran after the revolution to several nations ultimately being admitted to, you guessed it, the US. They demanded justice. The Islamic Republic of Iran was created in 1979 as a direct result of them overthrowing a brutal dictator we helped install. I don't agree with violence but I can at least understand why they were angry and their desire for justice, especially if their families were harmed.
Reagan in the 80’s then illegally sold weapons to Iran for help freeing American hostages in Lebanon. However the main goal of the arms sale was to use profits to fund a right wing military group, the Contras in Nicaragua, to attempt to overthrow that government. It subverted a newly enacted law by Congress specifically to not fund the Contra group, and forbed aid in overthrowing the Nicaraguan government, but Reagan did it anyway through the Iran-Contra deal. This further fueled cold war tensions between US and Russia even though the attempted overthrow failed.
I'm a middle aged white guy born in the south. Don't have a dog in the hunt. My opinion is we should let Israel lie in their bed after making it. They were the aggressor all around but I don't think they would have been if we didn't get their back. We shouldn't be there bombing nations for them. Yemen, Syria Lebanon, Gaza, and now Iran. 17,000 separate attacks in the middle east since October 7th. We need to know history and reflect on why things happened so if they were wrong we can take different steps next time to change for the good. Remember what W Bush said about being fooled twice. Well this is weapons of mass destruction all over again. We just shouldn't be involved, Scoot.
